HAMIRPUR
The history of Hamirpur is closely associated with the Katoch dynasty. Hamirpur was a part of old Jallandhar - Trigarta empire. The Katoch dynast became predominent during the period of Raja Hari Chand who ruled from 1700 A.D. to 1740 A.D. It was Raja Hamir Chand who built the fort at Hamirpur and the present town derived its name from this ruler. Hotel Hamir is named after Raja Hamir Chand.



ACCESS : The nearest airport is at Gaggal (Kangra) 83 km. The closet broad gauge railhead is at Pathankot 185 km. Taxis and buses are available at all these places. By road, the distance is 94 km from Dharamsala and 206 km from Chandigarh.



CLIMATE : In winter, the climate is cold but pleasant when woolens are required. During summer the temperature is hot and cotton are recommended.



PLACES OF INTEREST



SUJANPUR TIRA (25 km) : Sujanpur was a refuge of Sansar Chand Katoch, a great ruler of Kangra region from 1806 till 1824. Known as a builder and patron of pahari miniature paintings, a fortified palace at Tira overlooking Sujanpur town, remnants of 'Barahari Hall' and some exquisite frescos on the walls of Narbadeshwar and Gauri Shankar temple are testimony of Sansar Chand's abilities. Holi, a festival of colours is celebrated with fervour in March - April every year.

NADAUN(27 Km) : It used to be the capital of Sansar Chand Katoch of Kangra. The place is famous for fishing

BHOTA (15 Km) : This beautiful place is located on Dharamsala - Shimla road.

DEOTHSIDH (56 Km) : This is a famous pilgrimage centre and is a cave temple shrine dedicated to a child saint, Baba Balaknath. Himachal Tourism runs Hotel Deotsidh at Shahtalai, 10 km from the temple shrine.

DEOTHSIDH
Deothsidh meaning "Light of Truth" is a cave temple shrine, high on a spur of a Dhaulagiri hill where devotees have been keeping alive a sacred fire for over five centuries. This famous pilgrim centre is dedicated to a child saint Baba Balaknath, a deified ascetic of ancient times. At the caves entrance a shikhar style temple has come up. Nearby at Mathsthal are samadhis of Baba Balaknath's gurus belonging from Giri clan of sadhus.



ACCESS : Deothsidh is 217 km from Pathankot via Hamirpur, 56 km from Hamirpur, 172 km from Chandigarh via Bilaspur, 37 km from Bilaspur. Shahtalai at the base of this hill cave shrines is 10 km from Deothsidh.



CLIMATE : Winters are mild but woolens are required. Summers are warm and pleasant and cottons are recommended.
